Baking with kids: simple recipes and tips

Baking with our kids is one of our favourite ways to connect—and yes, it’s messy. We’ve learned to expect mess and to choose recipes with few steps: biscuits, muffins, a simple cake. They pour, stir, and (with care) crack eggs. We count spoonfuls, talk about what happens when we mix wet and dry, and set a timer so they can see when it’s done. The process matters as much as the result.

We keep a cloth and wipes ready. We assign jobs: one measures, one stirs. If they’re small we do the hot or sharp bits and they do the rest. When it’s ready we share it—family, neighbours, or just us. “We made this” is a powerful feeling for them (and for us).

Baking teaches patience, order, and cause and effect. And it’s a lovely way to spend time together. The mess cleans up. The memories don’t.
