Role-play lets kids try out being someone else—and it’s easier than you think. We set up simple scenarios with what we have and join in. No special kits, no stress. When we play the supporting role, they lead and the play goes deeper.

Shop: toys or tins as “goods,” paper as money, a bag as the till. We take turns being customer and shopkeeper. Doctor’s surgery: bandages, a “stethoscope” from string and a cup, and they check our heartbeat or fix a teddy. Café: take orders, “cook” with play food or drawings, serve at the table. We use what we have and let them invent the rest.

Role-play can last five minutes or fifty. When they’re done, they’re done. We follow their energy. Some of our best laughs have come from these games. You’ve got this.
