Rainy day activities for kids (no screen required)

We’ve all been there: the rain’s pouring, the kids are bouncing off the walls, and the screen is calling. Honestly? Some of our best days have been rainy ones—when we lean into simple play instead of fighting it. Here’s what actually works at our house, with zero fancy supplies.

Grab a cardboard box. Seriously. One big box becomes a fort, a car, or a spaceship—let them decide. Cut a door or window (your job if they’re little), throw in cushions and a torch, and you’ve got a cosy den that can last the whole afternoon. It’s magic how little they need.

Paper and crayons? Try “add to the picture”: you draw a line, they add something, and you keep going until the page is full. No right or wrong—just silly, collaborative fun. Hand prints turn into animals with a few extra lines; paper chains become “how long can we make it?” Same materials, fresh energy.

When the vibe needs to calm down, pull out a few books and tell the story from the pictures in your own words. Or play “guess the toy”: describe one from a small pile while they guess which it is. These ideas don’t need prep or Pinterest—just you, them, and a bit of attention. When the sun comes back, you’ll have had a calm day indoors. You’ve got this.
