Playdate ideas that work (when friends come over)

Hosting a playdate can feel like pressure to “entertain.” We’ve learned that playdate ideas don’t need to be a full programme—a few options and some snacks are usually enough. The point is connection and fun, not a perfect itinerary.

We have two or three activities ready: building with blocks, a simple craft, or an outdoor game if the weather’s good. We let the kids choose and drift between them. Shared making—a big drawing, a fort, or a pretend café—often works well because everyone can join in. Snack time gives a natural break and a chance to regroup. If things get tense we suggest a change of activity or a short game that involves everyone: pass the ball, “Simon says,” or a quick treasure hunt. Our role is to facilitate, not to entertain every second. When in doubt we go outside or offer a drink and a biscuit.

Short playdates often work better than long ones. An hour and a half can be plenty for little ones. You’re doing great.
