No-screen activities for kids: fun without devices

No screen

Screen time guilt is real—and so is the struggle to pull kids away. What’s helped us isn’t “no screens” as a rule so much as having a few no-screen activities that feel like a treat, not a punishment. The shift is offering “let’s do this” instead of “stop that.” It doesn’t work every time, but it works a lot more than you’d think.

Hands-on making is our go-to: blocks, drawing, play dough. Something with instant feedback so they’re not missing the device. “Add to the picture” is gold—one person adds a line or shape, the other adds something, and you see where it goes. Or “how tall can we build the tower before it falls?”—short, clear, and weirdly absorbing. Movement when they’re fizzy: freeze dance, follow the leader with silly moves, or a cushion-and-tape obstacle course. For calmer moments, describe an object in the room and they guess what it is.

We keep paper, crayons, a ball, and blocks where they can see them. When the alternative is visible and easy, switching from screens feels more like a choice and less like a battle. You don’t have to be perfect—just have a few options ready. Some days will still be screen-heavy, and that’s okay too.
