Music and rhythm activities for kids

You don’t need real instruments for music activities with kids. We use pots and spoons, shakers made from rice in a jar, and our voices and bodies. It’s loud, it’s silly, and the kids love it. So do we.

We sing together—nursery rhymes, made-up songs, whatever they like—and add actions so they can clap, stamp, or jump on the beat. Put on music and dance: freeze when it stops, or copy each other’s moves. Clapping back a pattern is a simple rhythm game that gets them listening. Shakers from empty bottles (rice or pasta, lid on tight), drums from upside-down pots and wooden spoons. They experiment with loud and quiet, fast and slow. There’s no wrong way.

Music with kids is about joy and connection. We keep it short, silly, and low-pressure. If they’re having fun, we’re doing it right. No talent required.
