Imaginative play is how kids make sense of the world and try out new roles. We don’t have a dress-up cupboard or fancy props—we just say yes to stepping into their story. It’s one of the most rewarding things we do together.

We follow their lead. If they’re running a café, we order something and pay with leaves. If they’re the teacher, we’re the student. A blanket over the table becomes a cave, ship, or castle. Cardboard boxes become cars, rockets, houses. A hat, a bag, a “phone” (block or remote) and the game grows. We try not to correct or direct too much. The story can be silly, repeat, or change direction. Our job is to play along and sometimes ask “what happens next?” When they’re in charge, their confidence and creativity grow.

Imaginative play builds language, empathy, and problem-solving. And it’s fun. That’s enough. You don’t need to be an actor—just willing to play.
