Building is one of the most versatile kinds of play in our house. It’s planning, problem-solving, and imagination—and you don’t need expensive sets. Blocks, cardboard, and everyday stuff work brilliantly.

We use what we have: wooden blocks, Lego, Duplo. “Tallest tower,” “bridge,” “house for a toy”—sometimes we add a timer for fun, sometimes they just build and knock down at their own pace. Cardboard boxes become forts, cars, or robots; tape and scissors (with us nearby) extend the possibilities. Blankets and chairs make instant dens: sheet over the table, cushions and a torch, and it’s a cave, ship, or secret base. Building with cushions—stacking, tunnelling, climbing—uses their body and brain.

When something falls, we treat it as part of the game and ask what they’ll try next. The process matters more than a perfect build. You’re building more than towers—you’re building confidence.
