The best “toy” in our house is often the cardboard box from the last delivery. No kidding—activities with a cardboard box have saved more rainy afternoons than I can count. With minimal cutting and a bit of imagination, one box becomes a den, a car, or a robot. Zero cost, maximum play.

Quick fort: big box on its side, blanket inside. If they can sit in it, cut a door and window (your job), then hand over the crayons so they can decorate. Add a torch and a book and you’ve got a reading nook or hideout. Car: box upside down, opening on the floor, paper plates for wheels, cardboard or paper plate steering wheel. They sit inside and “drive” or push. Robot: box over their body, head hole cut out, dials and buttons drawn on the front. Instant costume.

Got more boxes? Tape them together for a tunnel or maze to crawl through. Check for sharp edges and staples; supervise any cutting. When you’re done, flatten and recycle—or stash one for next time. A single box really can fuel a whole afternoon. Sometimes the simplest stuff is the best.
